GPSがやってきた

サンタさんがプレゼントにGPSを届けてくれた。
ロマンチックじゃない！と言いながら。
はい。すみません。

ガーミンのetrex VistaHCxである。
VistaというモデルはLegendに電子コンパスがついたモデル。
HCxのHは高感度アンテナ、Cはカラーディスプレイ、xはmicroSDカード装備、
だったような気がする。
一昔前の携帯電話のような大きさだ。

ともかく使ってみないとわからないので、
さっそく犬山の日本モンキーパークに連れて行った。

さすがにマンションの中やベランダではなかなかうまく測位してくれないが、
高速に乗ったり、犬山のあたりではしっかり衛星も捕捉できた。

自転車で出かけるときに使えると便利だろうなーと思っていたけど、
まずはログをとってみるだけでも楽しい。

でもコンピュータとの連携はウィンドウズマシンがないといけないんだよなー、

と思っていろいろ調べていたら、マック用にはRoadtripというガーミン純正のソフトがあるではないか。ダウンロードサイトは英語だけれど、ソフトは日本語が選べる。
ガーミン代理店のいいよねっとにはマック対応ソフトはまだないようなことが
書いてあったので驚いた。

さっそくインストールしてUSBでつないでみる。
ドライバも何も必要なく、データを吸い出せた。なんとも簡単だ。

Roadtripはこんな感じ。

まだマップソースを入れていないので、地図はざっくりしている。
でもひとまず今はログを見てにやにやするだけで充分楽しいのである。

Roadtripはgpx形式で書き出せるので、それを使えば、

Google Earthでも見られる。さらにここでkmz形式で書き出せば、

Googlemapでも見られる。

どんな楽しみ方ができるのかなーいろいろ試してみよう。

EZナビウォーク/EZ Naviwalk

久しぶりに自転車に乗った。実に１年ぶりくらい。最初はなかなかなれず、ちょっと戸惑ったけれど、やっぱり愛車はいい。

ところが久しぶりのその自転車、タイヤの空気がぬけていたのでぱんぱんに入れたが故か、走り始めて１０分ほどでタイヤがバースト。転ばなくてよかったものの、タイヤがバーストしたのは白金高輪と麻布十番の間で、知らない土地ではないのだけれど、いちばん近い自転車屋がどこにあるかを知っているほどでもない。

ので、つい１週間前にサインナップしたEZナビウォークを使ってみた。「周辺検索」で「自転車」と入れると、400mほど戻ったところに自転車屋があることがわかった。いやはやこんなに便利とは。助かった。

携帯のテクノロジーは進歩しすぎていてとてもついていけないのもあるけども、今日はその恩恵を感じた日でした。

I rode my bike after a long time, actually after over one year. Both tires got flat, so I pumped them up.

However, just after ten minutes ride, the rear tire bursted. I couldn't fix it, so I had to find a bicycle shop. Though I knew the place around there, I didn't know exactly where the nearest bicycle shop was. So I used "EZ Navi walk," which I just signed up a week ago, and I could find a bicycle shop right after that by using the service. It was pretty helpful. The mobile technology has improved so much that sometimes I have got confused. But today, I got impressed by that.

アップルのバッテリー問題/Apple battery issue

アップルもソニーバッテリーの問題をアナウンスしたようで、このニュースによるとどうやら僕のバッテリーも問題があるみたい。こえー。日本帰ったら交換しよっと。それにしてもアナウンスのメールくらいよこしてもいいものだが。

According to this news, the battery of my powerbook seems to have a problem. How scary... I have to replace it after going back to Japan. However, I haven't received or e-mail from Apple. They should have.

スカイプ/Skype

Skype経由で友達と次の旅行の計画をたてる。以前日本で使ったときに音声が遅れたり途切れたり、あんまりよくなかった記憶があって、こっちに来てからまだ一度も使ってなかった。今日使ってみたら思ったよりもよくてびっくり。声もしっかり聞こえるし、やり取りもスムーズ。パワーブックのどこにマイクがあるんだろう・・・と思ってしまった。

いやはやすげえ便利だ。しかも安い。ていうか無料。いまさらながらSkypeの便利さに驚いたわけでありました。

I talked with my friend about our coming trip via Skype. I haven't used Skype since I came here because I didn't think it worked well the last time I used it in Japan. This time it worked better than I expected, actually very good and convenient. I wondered where is a microphone on my powerbook... Anyways it's cheap. Rather free... Great.

Google Earth & Sketchup

Google Earthの新しいバージョンがリリースされた。インターフェースがちょっと変わったのと、あと衛星写真の解像度が上がったらしい。3D機能は本当におもしろくて、ついついいろいろ見てしまう。これは伊吹山。実家の近くからよく見える山です。あと金生山も見える・・・といっても地元の人にしかわからないか。

こちらは富士山。リアル。でもなんでこんな色？噴火前みたい・・・

アメリカのデータはもっとリアル。グランドキャニオンもこんなに見えます。

あとGoogle Sketchupというソフトもリリースされている。これはもともとGoogle Earth内で使う3Dオブジェクト生成のためのツールらしいんだけど、そうでなくても簡単なモデリング＆レンダリングツールとしても遊べます。大学にいたとき建築のCGを書くのにformZというソフトを使っていたのだけれど、なんかそれを思い出した。懐かしい。

Google Earth version 4 was released. Apparently its interface has been changed, and according to some news about it, the resolution of the satellite map has been intensified. I love its 3D effects. This is Mt. Ibuki, which I could see from around my hometown.

This is Mt. Fuji. I wonder why this is in such a color... It looks weird, like just before the eruption.

Maps in the States looks more accurate. You can see pretty much realistic Grand Canyon.

Also, they released Google Sketchup. This is originally a tool for making 3D objects in Google Earth, such as a big building, but you can play with this as a simple modeling and rendering tool. When I was an student back in Japan, I used to use a software "formZ" to create computer graphics of architectures. Although this Sketchup is much simpler than formZ, it still reminds me of those days.

黒いやつ/Black Mac

なんの兆候もなく（まあ少なくとも僕にとっては）アップルが「MacBook」を発表した。iBookと、12インチPowerBookの後継機にあたるらしい。ということは、今後はこの13.3インチMacBookと、15、17インチのMacBookProのラインナップでいくということか。僕が使っているPowerBookは12インチだけど、もうそんな小さなモデルはなくなるということ？この大きさ、気に入っていただけに少し寂しい（まあたしかにモニターとしては小さい）。

今回は黒いモデルもあるのが注目の的かもしれない。iPodも黒が出たし、コンピュータも黒が出るってことか。でも質感はどうなんだろう。金属なのかな。ポリカーボネートかな。てかてかしているのかな。それともつや消しなんだろうか。写真じゃわからん。

Without any sign at least for me, new "MacBook" has come to the market. They say this computer is the following model of iBook G4 and 12 inch PowerBook. Wait a sec. Does that mean that this model is gonna be the smallest computer? I mean, they're not gonna release 12 inch model? Now that I use 12 inch PowerBook, I feel familiar with it, so I am just curious.

Anyway, this "MacBook" has uncharacteristically black-colored model. Whew. I wonder how the feeling of the material is. Metallic? Plastic? Shiny? Matte? The picture on the web doesn't tell me.

グーグルマップの新しい楽しみ方？/A new way to enjoy Google map?

グーグルマップで面白い場所を見つけた。こことかここ。どちらもシカゴです。なんだか騙し画みたいに見えるけれど、ただ単にその周辺に衛星写真のつなぎ目があるだけなんだと思う。でも面白い。

探せば他のエリアでもありそうです。ニューヨークとか、高層ビルが集中しているところが見つかりやすそう。エレベーションが見えやすくなるからね。皆さんも探してみてください。

I found mysterious cityscapes in Google map. Here and here. These look like a trick, but I guess here is just the point where satellite pictures put together.

If you look for other area, you can possibly find similar points, especially where skyscrapers stand close together because it strengthens its visual effect. Let's find them!

いつもの日曜日/Routine Sunday

何の変哲もない、いつも通りの日曜日。何か書こうにもネタがない。中間試験の勉強して、気分転換に自転車で出かけて、雨に降られた。ひき肉とガルバンゾービーンのカレーをつくって、食べた。それだけ。

それだけ。ではつまらないので、おもしろいウェブサイトをひとつ紹介。ミスター味っ子料理の再現を試みているサイトです。本人のブログもなかなかとおもしろい。さぞ楽しい研究室でしょうねー。

I have nothing special today. Just routine Sunday. I was just studying for a coming mid-term exam, and went out for a ride for a change, and got wet a bit because of rain. I cooked kima curry and ate it. That's it.

So... I am gonna introduce you an interesting website. This includes interesting "neta," which is an attempt to realize "Mr.味っ子's" dishes.

Boot Camp

アップルがBoot Campのβ版をリリースした。Boot Campはインテルチップ搭載のマックで、ウィンドウズXPが利用可能になるソフトウェア（ウィンドウズXPの起動ディスクが必要）。以前アップルがIBMのチップからインテルのチップに鞍替えしたとき、まあマシンが速くなって、バッテリーの保ちが良くなればいいな、なんてことだけ考えていたんだけれど、こんなこともできるようになるんだ。これは技術的なイノベーションもともかく、マーケティング的な要素が強いと思う。

iPodはデビュー当時から売れていたように思っている人がいるけれど、爆発的に売れたのはやっぱりウィンドウズでも使えるようになってからだったと思う。なんだかんだ、ウィンドウズのマーケットは巨大だ。この「インテルマック」と「Boot Camp」の組み合わせも、iPodのような現象のきっかけになり得る。アップルのコンピュータは今後すべてインテルのチップ搭載になるし、次期メジャーアップデート（８月登場！？）の「Leopard」には「Boot Camp」が含まれるとのこと。マックミニなんかは比較的手頃だし、ウィンドウズも動くんならちょっと試してみるか、と、ウィンドウズユーザーのマーケットが大きく動くんじゃないかな。

アップルはハードウェアとソフトウェアを両方デザインできる希有な会社。今回のウィンドウズ対応は、アップルがただのハードウェアの会社になってしまうリスクもある。アップルのデザインに惹かれながらも、周辺環境との互換性なんかを考えて仕方なくウィンドウズにした人なんかも多いはず。そういう人にとっては、アップルはただウィンドウズが走る「かわいい」マシンを提供する会社になってしまう。だから、よほどマックのシステム、デザインに自信を持ってないと、こんなことはなかなかできない（その自信っぷりはインタビューでもわかる）。すげえなあ。

Apple released "Boot Camp," which allows us to install Window XP on Mac. To do that, we need Windows installation disc and intel-based Mac. When Apple first introduced the intel based Mac, I expected we could get a faster computer with longer time battery, but I couldn't expect such a thing. I think utilizing intel CPU could be critical point for Apple, in terms of not only a technological innovation, but also its marketing.

Some people think iPod had succeeded from its debut, but actually its sales raised especially after it could be available in Windows. In any means, the market for Windows people is huge. I guess the combination of intel Mac and "Boot Camp," which will be included on the upcoming major updated OS for Mac "Leopard," will make a great opportunity for people using Windows to switch into Mac. On the other hand, they can't do such a thing unless Apple are confident its system. Otherwise, there may be a possibility that Mac could became no more than a hardware maker. I was so impressed.

Gmail

このニュースによると、グーグルのGmailのサービスに、メールの内容に連動した広告が掲載されるようになったらしい。Gmailのサービスは日本語版はまだβ版で、限られた人しか使えない。僕はアカウント持ってないから確認はできないけれど、これってプライバシーとかの問題はないのかなあ、とふと思った。

「独自の言語解析技術を使ってメールの内容を自動的に判断し、」というから、まあ機械が勝手に作業をしてくれるんだろうし、メールの内容が完全に誰かの目にさらされるというわけではないと思う。グレーな気はするけど。

でも、グーグルとしては、世界を行き交うメールの中で、だいたいどんな話題がどれくらいされているのかという大まかなデータを得ることはできるはずだ。それぞれのメールにつく広告はもちろん、この大まかなデータを活用したビジネスの可能性もある。いままでは「ヤフー検索のトップ10」とかあったけれど、これからは「Gmailで交わされた話題のトップ10」とか発表されたりするのだろうか。なんか恐ろしいものがあるね。

This news said Gmail service provided by Google began to add ads in the mail based on the content of the mail. Now that Gmail service in Japan is a beta version and available only for the authorized users, I can't be given an account nor confirm this function. But I am wondering, doesn't this function infringe the privacy?

Of course an ad is supposed to be chosen by something like an automatic language analysis system Google has developed, not by hands, so probably anyone can't know an each content completely. I guess this is still ambiguous in terms of legality.

But think about it. They could figure out somehow what contents and topics are likely to be spoken in the mails all over the world. Besides an ad in each email, this whole enormous data should be useful data for business. Will Google use them? Will the day when the information like "top 10 topics spoken in Gmail" is released instead of "top 10 words searched in Yahoo!" come? It is scary.

新しいiPod？/New iPod?

このニュースによると、3.5インチのタッチスクリーン付きの新しいiPodの開発が完成間近らしい。発売は早くて３月下旬だとか。3.5インチなんて、かなり大きい。ほとんど一面スクリーンみたいな感じで、スクリーンから手を離すとクイックホイールも消えるような仕組みになっているらしい。

タッチスクリーンと言えば、ソニーのサイバーショットNシリーズはタッチスクリーンを採用していますね。画面をみながら、ピントを合わせたいところをタッチすればいいとか、新しいインターフェースはおもしろそうです。でもタブレットPCはまだまだいまいちな感じ。iPodのインターフェースでこのタッチスクリーンはどういう使い勝手になるでしょうかね。スタイラスとかついたら便利そうではあるけど、デバイスが増えるのはやだな。あ、ストラップか。

僕が今使っているiPodは2年半ほど前に買ったいわゆる第３世代というやつだけれど、今のところ故障も何もなく、いたって快適に使ってます。でも１５ギガの容量はそろそろいっぱい。買い替えるかどうかですが、この動向もあるようだし、夏くらいまでは待った方がよさそうですね。

それにしても、去年の9月から、nano、video iPod、intelMacと、アップルの攻勢は怒濤のものがあります。すごい。

This news says Apple computer are going to complete new video iPod that will have a 3.5-inch diagonal display with touch screen. The source says its release date will be possibly as early as late March or early April, though Apple don't any public announcements.

Speaking of touch screen, Sony's new digital camera Cybershot N sires equips a touch screen. When you want to focus on a subject, you can touch the point where you want to focus though its touch screen which is also display. It is quite interesting. But PC with touch screen has been seemingly just for digital gadget lovers. I wonder how well this new iPod will be. Will it be with stylus?

I have been using my what we call 3rd generation model iPod for 2 years an half. Now it works pretty well, but its hard drive capacity is almost full. Hmm... I have to consider a little.

Anyway, from the last September, Apple's new products rush has been overwhelming. hasn't it?

ホームページ/My website

自分のホームページをつくるのに、デジタルステージという会社が出している、「ID for Web LiFE」というソフトをつかってます。でも最近、このソフトをつかってつくったホームページは海外で（日本以外で）きちんと閲覧できない、ってことが判明。

デジタルステージに問い合わせてみると、日本語がネイティブなPCからでないと正しく閲覧できないと言うこと。こっちのインターネットカフェとかにある「日本語モードもあります」というパソコンもだめだってことだ。確かに日本語環境もある学校のコンピュータからのぞいてみたら、文字化け化けでエンコードしても全然直らなかったのだけれど、そういうことだったのか。僕が普段使っているPCは日本で買ったパワーブックでこちらでも普通に見られるから、全然気づかなかった。

ホームページは日本語オンリーだけれど、写真がたくさんあげてあるから、わかりやすくていいかな、とも思ったのだけれど、そうもいかないみたい。残念です。それにしても、ホームページ、html、フラッシュはもっとユニバーサルだと思っていたんだけれど、そうでもないみたい。今度はDreamweaverかなにかでもう少しシンプルでわかりやすいホームページでもつくってみるかなあ・・・

ページ構成とかは維持されるみたいなんだけど、写真とかが全部デフォルトになってしまう・・・あう。

I use a software "ID for web life" to build my website, but recently it has turned out that we couldn't see my website correctly from abroad (which means outside Japan). When I sent a mail to the company which developed this software to question that, they said we couldn't see properly the website made of using this software from non-Japanese native computer. I can see my website properly through my PC even here, in Berkeley, because I bought my powerbook in Japan and this is Japanese native computer. So I haven't noticed until recently.

Although my website is Japanese only, I uploaded a bunch of pictures to my website, which I have though were easy to understand. Finally, I find that doesn't work. That made me a little sorry.

I have thought a website is much more universal, but that things could happen in such a case. We have to take care of that.

インテルマック/Intel Mac

インテルプロセッサを搭載した新しいマックが発表になりました。１月に登場するのでは、という噂はありましたが、想像よりも早かったような印象があります。「マックブックプロ」と名付けられた新しいパワーブック（と呼んではもういけないのだろうか・・・）は、見た目はほとんど変わりませんが、デュアルコア採用で２倍の速さになって、isightのウェブカメラを搭載、そして新しいバッテリーコードを採用してます。この新しいバッテリーコードは磁石でくっつく仕組みで、それによって抜差しの繰り返しによる疲労が原因の故障を防ぐほか、電源コードに足を引っかけてそれにつられてマックも机から落下！という不幸な事態も防ぐことが出来ます。こういうアイデアは、大歓迎です。

インテルのチップ採用の理由の一つに、「省電力」ってのがあったような気がしたんですが、今回の新しいパワーブック（だからパワーブックじゃないって）はバッテリーのことはあまり言及されてませんでした。どこかの記事で１時間くらいのびた、と読んだような気がしたようなしないような。今の僕のパワーブックも、バッテリーが３時間しかもたないので、それがちょっと不満でもあります。次に期待しましょう。

A new powerbook equipped with dual intel chip debuted! That is earlier than I expected. They say the new powerbook named "Macbook pro" can perform twice faster than previous one. In addition, they have isight, and newly developed AC adapter, which can be attached magnetically, and which can prevent them from falling from a desk when someone stumble on its battery cord.

I expected battery would run longer, but they didn't refer that. Now, my powerbook runs only less than 3 hours with its battery. On the other hand, some windows computer run much than 8 hours!! I wish next powerbook (actually, macbook pro) has longer battery.

グーグルマップ活用

最近改めてグーグルマップをいじってみて、その面白さに惹かれてます。紙ベースの地図にはないおもしろさがありますね。特にサテライトとの連携が面白い。

というサイトを運営しているんだけれど、このサイトは、GPS機能付きの携帯電話で地図情報を付加した写真を投稿すると、その情報が地図をつくっていくというもの。ランドスケープとは、都市の見え方、それはまさに地図だ、なんてことをその友人が話していたことがありますが、確かに人のアクティビティの軌跡が、いわゆる記号化された地図を越えた何かを描いているようにも思えます。

これがもっと活用できないか、という話題で盛り上がったりしたことがあります。その中で、「防災用に使えないのかな」という意見があったんだけれど、グーグルマップを使って、カトリーナによる被害のプロットを行っているサイトがありました。

すごいね。略奪だとかそんな話題も多くて暗い気分になったりもするけれど、テクノロジーと市民がうまく連携すれば、とても有効になりうる、ということを実証しているように思います。
